Celebrating Sheffield’s 25 Years of Success

Lynx basketball club grew out of some basketball sessions set up by Tina Gordon and Activity Sheffield back in 2006. Those early sessions were full of enthusiasm and short on skill with players and balls going everywhere. How things have changed!

By the spring of 2007 we had a name and had become Lynx Basketball, part of Special Olympics Sheffield. Training has continued week in, week out ever since with players coming and going and everyone gaining in the skills necessary to play the game.

The name reflects our ties with City of Sheffield Basketball who put us in touch with our first official coach, Neal and also our most longstanding volunteer Jazz, who has since taken over main coaching duties.

In 2009 five members joined 5 players from Bradford and took part in the Special Olympics National Summer Games in Leicester, achieving bronze medals in their division.

The Lynx team played a couple of games against a local schools team but it wasn’t until 2013 that they all had their first real taste of competition, in a Special Olympics regional event in Loughborough.

The following year 2014 we held the first National Basketball competition here in Sheffield with teams from around the country enjoying 2 full days of competition (and silver medals for our players).

In 2015 Niall and Alex, along with Jazz as coach, went to the SO World games in LA as part of the GB squad and came back with gold medals from their division.

In 2017 our players were joined by others from the Yorkshire region to take part in the 10th National Special Olympic Games, here in Sheffield.

Since then there has been a series of development competitions in Chesterfield and Manchester and in November 2018 some players attended the West Midlands Regional basketball tournament.

In 2019 Tonisha and Coach Jazz went to Abu Dhabi to take part inthe Special Olympic World Games, the squad achieved Bronze medals.

Our training is held at Goals Centre, Norfolk Park Road on a Tuesday evening from 5-6pm, for more information do get in contact.
